I glanced at the long black dress that mum was holding up. “No, I told you, no black!”

“Why!” It would look so pretty on you, come on, at least try it on?” My mum pleaded. I rolled my eyes and turned back to the rack.

“Ooooh, how’s this?” I just kept looking. “No really, I promise, its not too long and hasn’t got any pink, black or flowers.” I put the dress I’d been looking at back on the rack next to the other five dresses mum had distracted me form. She held up a long dress with pink and black flowers.

By the time we walked out of the fourth shop having tried on forty dresses, I was more than ready to go and get a coffee from Nero- and possibly never walk again.

“I’d forgotten how hard you are to shop for Raine, There is something wrong with EVERYTHING with you!” She turned around to give me a hug. “I’d also forgotten how much fun you are to shop with.” I smiled at her. We walked towards the exit of the shopping center, on our way to get popcorn and a movie out from blockbusters to help break the news that we wouldn’t be going to the dance to the boys.

“Just a moment mum, I have to go the the loos- meet you at the doors.” I ran towards the toilets, past all the shops we’d tried but not found anything in- Topshop, H&M, New Look, Zara…And finally a shop we had passed, but never entered. A shop with Closing down sale signs all over it. A few people were milling around in it, but none of them looked very enthusiastic.

I rushed in and scanned for the dress I had seen last time we passed. It was hidden at the back, behind a row of untouched shorts that I had seen for twice as much in Topshop that had been selling out like wildfire. The dress I had in mind was strewn across a chair as If someone had tried it on, then just thrown it away rather than hanging it back up. I was surprised I seen it form outside, given it was so far back, but then, it was rather eye catching.

It was off the shoulder, with a yellow background and vibrant red, green, orange, purple and pink patterns all over. I decided to quickly try it on in the changing rooms- mum wouldn’t notice if I took a while. I wasn’t expecting it to fit; it was too pretty to work out that easily, but after quickly trying on, I discovered it fit perfectly! It was almost as if it were made for me, I had never had anything that fit so perfectly. I took it to the checkout, suddenly fearing that even with the sale on, something so beautiful would cost much, much more than I had on me.

“Excuse me?” I asked the sale assistant. She was a young girl, only a few years older than me, with a tall figure, long, straight black hair pulled back into a ponytail, and lots of piercings. She did not look like she wanted to be here. She looked up but didn’t say anything. I went on.

“How much does this cost?” I asked. She looked it up and down, and sighed.

“Fiver.” She handed out her hand for the cash, without even looking at the till. Although there was a reason for that, as I saw on the way out- It was broken. Everything in the shop seemed to be actually… except for my dress. I didn’t pay any attention to that though, just rushed into my purse and gave her the money before she could change her mind.

“Have a good day.” I heard her mumble unenthusiastically as I rushed out the door.
