It wasn't when I saw Sande When she began to sing About the world and news and us And life and everything
Or when she posed on the piano And her ride drove her away Across the frozen London town Of white papier mâché
It wasn't the technicolor Of dance and joyful song A renewed British stereotype From the queues and ordered throng
It wasn't One Direction Or Pet Shop Boys or Madness Or the appearance of Prince Harry That filled my heart with gladness
It wasn't all the acrobats The music and the joy Or the model city structures They were just a toy
Nor the resonance of Stomp The thud, sweep and clash Their intoxicating rhythm Paired with that nimble dash.
It wasn't the rainbow taxis It wasn't the skating nuns It wasn't Winston Churchill Not when all was done
Though I did love Annie Lennox In her ghost ship clad in black Her red an gothic overalls Brought fond memories back
But it wasn't her, not truly And it wasn't Jessie J And it wasn't George Michael Or the others who sang today
All those things I've mentioned All and so much more Would be nothing without one simple act At the ceremony's core
When the champions all waltzed in Their colours formed one piece China, Spain and Italy USA and Greece
Their unity and pride Now void of competition They'd all done their very best Performed a fine rendition
That moment made wonder When they poured out, more and more Why can't we always be like this? Why strife or endless war?
The world was so united Under a single sign The colours of humanity The banner of mankind
I'm bored of all the conflict I'm sick of all the fight And so was most of planet Earth For just this blissful night
I wish the songs and music And reminiscent bands And all the medals won and lost Could end "Afghanistan"
So thank you all the celebs And thank you all the singers And thank you to the athletes And all the backstage riggers
Thank you to the people Who made this beauty real And all those who supported Who set aside their zeal
Imagine if this unity This world-binding event Could save us from destruction Save us the lament
But no matter all our efforts We live in a dystopia The spirit of Olympia dies As does this small Utopia
