•Chapter 2 - No Buts, Kai-San • •Ammi•
Lord Death was an unusual looking character. He was a distorted shape, cloaked in all black, with spikes poking out in every direction, his black button eyes the only part of his face visible, the rest covered by a white mask with three downward pointing spikes. The rumour was that his real face scared some of the (cowardly) students too much, so he was forced to wear a mask and speak in a ridiculously high tone. His room was... Well, it wasn't really even a room. It was a white platform in mid-air, surrounded by clouds and high pillars, mirrors everywhere, all different shapes and sizes. Mirrors were Death's way of transport throughout the city. I stood feebly in front of him. Kai had more of a direct approach, shoulders back, fists clenched, gritted teeth. This can't be good. "Kai, Ammi. I had a feeling you would be visiting me sometime soon" he chortled, floating in midair as he tapped his chin with one extremely large, white-gloved hand. "What on earth could bring you here on a sunny Sunday such as this?" he continued. Kai inhaled a large breath, his deep blue eyes dark and sullen-looking. "We can't resonate our souls. It just won't work" he sighed, suddenly upset as he stared down at the marble floor beneath his feet. "And why do you think that is, Kai-San?". Ooh. Kai hates being called by his full name. He always says "It's just Kai. Kai Tucker". Kai sighed again, bringing his head up to reveal a stony hard glare, aimed at me. Oh god. "it's Ammi. She's too weak for a soul of my power" he snapped, before turning his head to look up at the floating figure that was our headmaster. Lord Death chuckled at Kai's words, whereas I felt like crying all over again. He's going to ditch me. He's going to ditch me and find another Meister. I just know it. I can see it in the way his glare is confident and harsh. "Oh, Kai-San" Death sighed, giving him what seemed to be a gentle smile, hidden by the thick white mask he wore. "You think it is your partner, Ammi's fault?". "Yes my Lord". "Well then, you are wrong" Death said confidently. Kai frowned. I gasped. It's not my fault? I'm not a weakling? "But my Lord-" Kai began, but Lord Death finished for him. "No buts Kai-San. Your failing partnership is not a fault of your partner's, but it is a fault of your own". Kai's face went red with rage, his chiselled features becoming more and more prominent as he clenched his jaw and gritted his teeth. His fault? There was no way in hell that Kai would accept that. Ever. "You are, although, correct about your partner's weakness. Your partnership is one that interests me deeply. Kai-San, you overpower Ammi. You cannot control your temper with her failures, and therefore, scare her into succeeding" Death explained. What? Kai? Scare me? No way... "It's not my fault Ammi fails. She's just pathetic" Kai defended himself as I watched on in silence. "Why do you speak so lowly of your Meister? She is the one after all, that wields you, and drives you into succession. Without her, you will never become Death Daggers" Death continued to speak. This has actually gone better for me than I originally expected. "You are both rich in what the other lacks. Kai-San, you need to learn how to respect, and love your Meister, and Ammi, you must learn how to not be afraid of your weapon" Death seemed to be coming to the conclusion of his speech, and Kai and I listened intently for his judgement. "As of today, you will attend partnership lessons with Dr. Stein, Monday to Friday, you will spend an hour after school practicing what you lack. Your first lesson will take place in the courtyard at 3:05 PM" he explained, and I could practically read Kai's thoughts as the words continued to emanate from Death's mouth. 'I'm not going' was exactly what he was thinking. Well, he was. I want this to work. I need this to work. If it doesn't, Kai will leave me for another Meister, and no matter how terribly he treats me, I need him in my life. I can't explain it. I don't know why. I just do <3
