Exhaustion eventually took its hold on her and she fell asleep. It was welcome. Alex stayed in the spare room again, he hated the thought of catching anything and he would need to be able to attend to Josh in the morning without waking Eve.
The morning came, and still she couldn't eat, couldn't taste, couldn't bare the morning light. Everything was an effort, so again she made that phonecall to Sam. This time Sam was a bit harsher on her. Not about work but getting herself down to the Doctors. Eve said she would call today but at the back of her mind she thought it would blow over.
With everyone safely off to school and work, and safe in the knowledge that Alex was only flying locally he would be able to pick up Josh later, she fell asleep again.
When she woke, she still felt tired. The pain in her head was terrible. The cavities between her eyes piercing. She got out of bed feeling unsettled and dizzy and made her way down stairs. The bright light from the conservatory blinding her. Oh why is this all such an effort, she thought. She popped some bread in the toaster. I really must eat she told herself but the thought of putting food on her tasteless mouth overwhelmed her and she sat down put her head on the table and started to cry. The toast and tea was a mistake. She barely nibbled the corner and the tea repelled itself about ten minutes later after another coughing fit. She made her way back to bed slowly, it was the only place she could escape the light and ease the pain and discomfort. She'd had enough, perhaps it was just a bad case of sinusitis she couldn't shift. She called the doctors to see if she could get a prescription. Little Miss Jobsworth on the other end of the phone was not sympathetic to her plight. "No I'm sorry we can't do prescriptions over the phone. I know you've had them before, but we just can't. Can you come down, I have a space for an emergency appointment?" Eve tried to explain that she barely had energy to get out of bed let alone go to the surgery. It was then that the receptionist heard the desperation in her voice. "Ok, I'll get Dr Harris to call you" "Thank you" Eve said and the call was ended.
