What a beautiful day it was today. Not a cloud in the expanse of blue. The autumn sun beat gently on my face as i made my way to the high street, pushing sleepy Erin in her pram. The colleges noon bells ringing out as I walk. I never tire of the sound of bells.
I needed a new scribble journal, so visited a well known retailer and found a lovely faux leather patterned one. Perfect.
After I had paid, and been offered the usual, "would you like an enormous bar of chocolate for a pound?" I made my way to the exit.
There were two elderly gentlemen standing outside in the way of the door, one had a walking stick, deep in conversation.
I tried to manoeuvre past them, without disturbing their discussion, but I couldn't. So eventually, I just said excuse me kindly, with Erin adding her own vocal.
"Oh" one said while turning round. The other with a big smile said "I thought you were offering us a lift!"
I smiled and just said that I hadn't wanted to disturb them.
So then they have a look round at my little diamond in the pram, and that was that.
"oh she's a beauty, isn't she?" "what do you call her then?" "oh that's lovely" "how old is she, about a year?"
And so our little conversation goes with these two gents. One starts telling me all about a new grandson, seven weeks old. But the one with the walking stick has a little wobble, so I catch hold of his arm and suggest he sits on the bench to our right near the bus stop. Which he does. There is space there for three so I sit also and so does his friend. I ask him if he is alright and he reassures me he is.
I sat there for at least half an hour with these two old gents, telling me about their children, bits about there day and asking me the usual " that's not a local accent is it?" and so I have to explain what a Scottish lass is doing sitting on a bench chatting to two strangers.
I don't know these men, I didn't even find out there names but they left a permanent smile on my face for the rest of my day.
We all live such busy lives, round the clock services, communication devices, virtual friends that sometimes we forget to slow down and ..... just talk.
