"Wait for me" he said " You'll always be mine"
She had the dress He had new shoes But he was needed elsewhere Wearing air force blue
"I love you, My beautiful belle, I am captivated And under your spell"
Those three words Entrapped in her mind Cemented in darkness Her heart too blind
Days turn to nights Weeks passed her by Still she waits Looking to the sky
Then one day She hears from another Missing In Action Her beautiful lover
Only Missing Not gone forever "I'll keep waiting" Through this stormy weather
So here she sits Fifty years gone Looking through the window Old gas light still on
Sometimes she feels His kiss on her lips Remembers their last dance His hand on her hips
Her face may be old But her heart is still young Her love still yearns But war silenced her tongue
The lamp flickers As day turns to night A cool breeze passes over She squints in the light
Tired of waiting The years take there toll The agony of heartbreak Adopts her soul
As she takes her last breath She sees his smile He's been waiting too All this while
She reaches for his hand And his warm embrace She looks into his eyes And his beautiful face
No longer she waits Their love shines bright The gas lamp remains Burning into the night
