9 January 2013

It was January 5th, the picturesque snow from the festive period was beginning to melt, just like her normally cool facade. The air still biting like the guilt in her heart. Christmas was a rather unfortunate time to die; even undertakers need time off. Everyone had to wait, and that included the woman on the mortuary slab.

The journey to the airport was uneventful, despite the weather. As the crow flies it wasn't far, but it was the worst city airport drive to, as it was actually no where near the city. A and B roads all the way, with no one for company apart from the irritating DJ on the radio. Evelyn felt the repetitive play list this morning, had been tailored for her.

She felt alone, very alone. The one time she needed him; truly needed a strong arm to lean on, was now. But alas, it was not to be; fate had dealt a cruel card; she tried not to dwell on it. After all his career was more important.

Her phone buzzed on the passenger seat, she glanced over to look at the caller display. It was Hayley from the office; couldn't they survive just one day without her? She resisted the temptation to pick up the call, and continued her way in to the car park.

As the barrier approached, 'Run' came on the radio again. at one time she would have happily sang her heart out, ignoring the stares from fellow drivers, but today she listened to the lyrics more closely and took her ticket.

The mounds of tarnished snow were piled high to the sides of the car park; puddles of slush filed the pot holes creating a novel chicane towards the long stay section.

It was surprising how busy the carpark was at this time of year; skiers she thought, and smiled.

Finally, she manoeuvred the car with ease in to a space...and just sat.

'C'mon Evelyn, pull yourself together' she thought. 'Just treat it like every other flight, you love the airport.'

She stared through the windscreen at the city boy, getting out of his black Audi in the opposite space. He glanced in her direction and smiled.

'Tidy' she thought. Maybe he'd be on her flight.
