My favourite holiday destination so far is stunning in every season. In winter the mighty Alps are covered in a fleecy blanket of snow, the breathtaking peaks are majestic in the landscape, beneath a sapphire sky. Icing sugar sprinkled trees line the long flowing pistes. The fresh alpine air is a delight to inhale. The biting cold tingles on your nose and fingers but the sun is beating down on your head. Eating snitzel and drinking a warming glass of gluhwein at the summit of a glacier, while sunbathing on a deck chair. There's no other feeling like it on top of the world, taking in the spectacular panoramic views. At twilight, the sapphire sky turns to a palette of pastels then to black, pin pricked by a galaxy of stars. White or blue fairy lights adorn the snow covered houses, transforming them into the perfect Christmas card.
In summer, the dramatic, rugged snow capped mountains, look down upon lush green valleys, meadows and the beautifully tranquil lakes. Hillsides are dotted with picturesque villages, vineyards and little castles. Hidden mountain paths provide the ideal trails for walkers and bikers. Powerful rivers run through the valleys, there danger hidden in there beauty, a Mecca for kayakers and rafting. The sound of thrill seekers echo in the distance while mountain goats bells ring.
Every breath you take is clean, fresh and pure. The hills are truly alive.
This is the Austria I know and love.
