Chapter 3
Finnick
It's reaping day. I meet Annie at the beach at 8 this morning and when I arrived she was already there. She was sitting in the shallows in the same crumpled shorts and shirt as yesterday. Her long dark hair was hanging loose and her arms where around her knees. She looked as if she was holding herself together.
"What's up?" I say softly, sitting down beside her in the sea.Annie sniffs and swallows. "So, Annie Cresta, are the odds in your favour today?!" I say in a ridiculous high Capitol accent. She laughs a little and says "No. Not exactly. 18." Then it's my turn to be speechless. 18 times. 18 slips of paper in that big glass bowl have Annie Cresta written on them. My heart plummets but I try to stay positive. "Hey, maybe they are! Remember that girl Wiress, from 3? Her name was in 4 times and she got picked over everyone else!" I chose my example carefully. Wiress won. We sit in silence, thinking about who will get reaped when we hear the loud BOOM of the horn calling us to the town square. Annie jumps up and starts to run back to her house. I get up to follow and take her hand but she slips it out of my grip and whispers "I'll meet you there..." she smiles sadly. "Don't worry! It... It won't be me". I wish I could be as sure...
