Chapter 5
Annie
I can barely stand. I run forward, grab Raini's arm from the little kids pen and grab Misty and Eli from the side. Mum will have to wait.
I race into the justice building, trying not to get lost in the twisting marble corridors. I find a room at the end, guarded by old Smith and another peace keeper. I can't speak but I look him in the eye and he gently whispers "5 minutes for you, love. Don't tell the boss." He smiles kindly, his old withered eyes creasing up in the corners. Old Smith's grand daughter was in the Games a few years ago. She never came back.
I push open the door so fast Finnick wakes up and sees me. I put Eli and Misty down and Raini sits at the desk sadly, pulling Eli on to her lap. I collapse into Finnicks open arms and start sobbing violently while he strokes my hair. " Don't cry. Don't you dare cry, Annie Cresta" He tells me. I suddenly feel bad. He is the one who has been sentenced to his death but I'M crying?! I feel terrible. I slump against him and he wraps his arm around me. Then he suddenly sits up and holds my shoulders at arms length. " Tell me, Annie, why are you crying?" I look at him helplessly and say "You're a tribute! You are going to be a part of they're sick games and you... You..." I start to cry again. " No. No Annie I'm not. I'm going to win. I'm going to win for you. For us. I'll come back home and you better believe me, I will come back to you Annie. I swear." his eyes were red and puffy but there was a determination in them I couldn't deny. " I know you'll come back, Finn. You are going to win. " we sit there staring at each other , and old Smith slowly opens the door. "You have to go sweetheart, I'm sorry. " I hug him tight in my arms, telling myself this won't be the last time. "Look after the kids Annie, don't let them starve. I LOVE YOU!" he calls down the corridor. I call the same back, carrying Misty with a numb heart and brain
