21 April 2012

My night was getting a little odd for me. There's plenty of evidence that Jack was a vampire, yeah, but the guy who attacked him, a werewolf? No.

"Uh," my voice shook a little as I drew the sound out. "What?"

Griffin sprang out of the dark, and I didn't notice him until he was almost on top of us. Then, suddenly, Jack leapt into the air and met him in the middle, their bones cracking together.

Then I saw something I'd never seen before.

Griffin, underneath Jack's blows, began to change and morph into something else. I watched as fur spread over his body and, dropping on all fours, his back began to even out. Before I knew it, I was staring at a wolf.

He was a little bigger than the average wolf, with jet black fur and a gray diamond on his forehead. He was snarling and, with his teeth bared, he lunged toward Jack again.

This time, Jack was not ready.

The wolf attacked Jack. It bit down, hard, into his arm and tore a chunk of skin off.

I could feel the mask of horror I was wearing as Jack looked toward me and yelled in pain, "Run, Nora, run!"

I bolted. It would've been okay if I had forgotten everything I'd just seen, even if I forgot Jack. Darting down that dark hall, in between moonlight streaks, the fear was feeding my adrenaline.

So you can imagine how I felt when I heard the click of claws against the wood floor.

Sliding around to a random dark hall intersecting the one I had come from, I stopped, covering my mouth with my hand so the wolf couldn't hear my rapid breathing.

But I was positive he could hear my pounding heart.

Suddenly, there was panting in my ear, hot breath and sweat pouring into it.

I gasped, crawling away, backwards, from the wolf. I could practically see the smirk on its face as it slithered toward me.

It was a couple inches from my face when it howled, collapsing on me.

What? I didn't understand...I thought it wanted to kill me. Why would it...?

Then I saw the dagger, driven through its chest. Across from it, Jack, slumped against the wall, blood dripping from his face, chest, and arm. That made me gasp again.

"Oh my gosh, Jack," I slid out from under the heavy wolf with (some) difficulty and ran over to Jack. "Are...are you okay? What can I do?"

"I need you...to trust me," he whispered in my ear. That's when I realized it was true. He was a vampire. And he was asking for my blood.

I hesitated. What if he killed me? What if he took too much blood? Or left me here for the other wolves in the pack- because I knew there were more- to eat me? Would he...do that?

No. No, he wouldn't. He'd had plenty of opportunities to kill me, if he wanted to. He could've let the wolf kill me. But he hadn't.

So I swept my hair off my neck and pressed my wrist to his mouth.

Because I trusted him.
