I place my head upon your chest And listen to your heart Beating Thump - thump -thump And the doubt on my face Is swift Merely fleeting
For your heart is strong now Healthy and happy A parent's ultimate goal- But when you first drew breath In this big world Your heart carried a tiny hole
The BEAT BEAT turned to b e a t Prayers were said, wringing hands Chaos, confusion, tears I looked on helplessly as the sum of all My fears
Appear before me in doctors nurses tubes and drips Have you ever stood and observed Something so precious as it slips-
Away from you? And you know at that moment There's nothing you wouldn't do To exchange places A life for a life Make it ME instead of you
But listen? There's a sound! One I thought I'd never hear A cry! And for the first time It instantly was clear
That miracles can happen though I'd Never have believed it before And in front of my eyes I bore witness to the marvel No mistaking what I saw
So when I listen to your heartbeat Which I often do, even now I know I've already been given All that heaven will allow.
