4 August 2012

You’ve just turned 11 and I can’t believe how quickly time has passed. I remember the first time I saw you and how you fell asleep in my arms. I’d waited so long for a sibling and here you were after more than 20 years. Same mum different dad, but nothing half about my love for you.

Recently you have been asking to use the phone. You’ll never know how much your calls mean to me. The way you sing the Beatles or Bad Manners songs to me when I am sick. See, you didn’t speak until you were 4. That was when we found out you are autistic. Shell-shocked but determined to give you all the support you needed.

Thinking of you makes my heart swell. I am so proud of you and every one of your achievements. The bond between us was instant and forever, not only because we’ve the same eyes, laugh and cheeky sense of humour but because you are you.

I try not to worry about your future because however different you are, you are happy and that is what is important. Who is to say how your life will turn out, you’ve surprised us all so much already. Whatever happens, I promise you I will always look out for you and do whatever I can to keep you safe and happy.

Love always, your big sis xxx
