Chapter 1~ Edward Masen and Esme Evenson
"Carlisle!" I heard someone call. I recognised this voice to be Edward Masen's, a very ill 17 year old boy. He had Spanish Influenza, and was getting closer to death every second. "I'm coming Edward," I replied in a calm voice. I arrived just in time to see Edward put his sick bucket back on the floor. He stared at me, his green eyes looked agonised, he knew he was dying. "Carlisle, help me!" Edward pleaded. "I'm trying my best Edward, I'm trying," I answered solemnly. "Carlisle!" this time I recognised this voice to be the voice of a nurse. I glanced at Edward once more and hurried over to the next bed, where Edward's mother was lying, her fragile body dangerously thin. "She needs a blood transfusion," the nurse told me quickly. I nodded and put her name on the waiting list, blood transfusions made me nervous. The blood made me nervous. I am an immortal, a vampire, however you prefer me to say it. I will never die, I always look so pale, I crave blood (although I've nearly learnt to control myself) and I'm nearly 400 years old yet I look quite young. This year,1918, I plan to create another immortal, and I knew just who it was going to be... "Carlisle..." Elizabeth Masen (Edward's mother) whispered, she had tears in her eyes. I looked up at her, it was so hard to see the pain she was in, mentally and physically. "Save my son. Save Edward, I love him so much, please Carlisle. I'm hours away from death and there is nothing you can do for me, but Edward...he has a chance. Please Carlisle, please..." she begged, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm trying everything Elizabeth," I whispered, she could hear the pain in my voice. Elizabeth nodded, and closed her eyes. I silently, opened the door and left the room. "Carlisle!" I sighed heavily, and went to see the next patient, they weren't critically ill. In fact, they could be sent home, we could use that bed for another patient. I love my job, but at the moment it is one of the hardest things in my life, at least one person dies everyday. There were two people in this hospital at the moment, that I cared about so much. Edward Masen and Esme Evenson. Both were close to death, and it killed me to see them in pain, but there wasn't much I could do anymore. Esme is so beautiful, she has a perfect heart-shaped face, long brunette hair and she cries every morning when she hears the news that someone had died. Esme, like me, hates someone to die, even if she hardly knew them. Edward, is a charming boy with startling green eyes and bronze coloured hair. He is very thin and I estimated that he has about two days left to live. "CARLISLE!" this time it was a scream. So fast that I was just a blur, I ran to room 114, this was where Elizabeth was...I threw open the door and saw her body on the bed, motionless, I couldn't hear her heart, her breathing. Nothing. I touched her skin gently, and found that it was very cold, like mine. Another sign that Elizabeth was dead. My face was twisted with pain, she was gone and Edward was alone now, how would I break this news to him? Elizabeth had her eyes closed, and she looked so peaceful, I'd rather that than her be screaming in agony. Elizabeth Masen, time of death, 21:04.
