Chapter 1

With tears piercing my eyes, I silently listened to the radio buzzing at the front of the church. It told me that in this year, 1939 a war would brake out across the world.

"Don't worry Lizzie, I will make sure that you will be safe," my mother told me in a gentle voice.

Living in London meant that I would have to be evacuated with all the other London children. I will have to leave my loving mother and I am only 10 years old, I couldn't bare to think about it. I closed my eyes, hoping that this would mean that I would be at home with my mother, sewing, and none of this would have happened. However, as I opened my eyes I could hear the buzzing of the radio and see children and women sobbing. I leant my head against my mothers shoulder and the waiting tears rolled down my cheeks.

When I got home, I began to question my mother about what it would be like when I was evacuated.

"Well, with all the children in your class, you will go on a train to the countryside and then a kind volunteer with a spare bed will look after you for a while," she told me.

"I will miss you mum," I whispered, my eyes filling with tears again.

"I will miss you too sweetheart," my mother replied and I could hear that she was crying too.
