I looked at the animals. They looked pathetic. These were definitely NOT what I was destined to ride into the palace when I was crowned Queen. I'm definitely not a girly girl, but then, I'm not a tomboy either. I guess I'm just an imbetweener.
Ok. Now I have given the dramatic first bit I can tell you a bit about me. First of all I am the daughter of a king and a queen. Secondly, I live in the year 43 AD and do not enjoy being a teenager. Thirdly, my coronation takes place in three weeks time. Ok, now I'll get back to the dramatic bit.
So where was I? Oh yes I'm an imbetweener. Anyway, the animals in front of me looked powerful, even deadly sometimes but their first appearance was nothing to the like of me. Unicorns. You know, supposedly mythical creatures with white coats, manes and tail and a great big magical horn on their head. So yes. Maybe beautiful in someone else's eyes but in mine they were a horse made out of snow and a little twig on their forehead. Do you see my problem now? I'm stuck at choosing between five different snow horses and I have no idea how I'm going to pick. Well, until my father picks anyway. Father always goes for the stroppy ones. He says he 'just wants a little character in the animal.' Which is complete nonsense to me because every time he chooses an angry male unicorn he gets bucked straight off and then curses it to the heavens of the Gods.
So here we are, me, five unicorns, my father and my wimpy mother. Yep. You heard me right, my WIMPY mother. She could be called wimpy a million times and still be the wimpiest mother on earth. She really doesn't do much apart from bite her uneven nails and announce that 'it's a new day and everything is bright and peaceful in our kingdom as it has for bla bla bla.' You get it now. I've got the oddest match of parents in the world. Ever.
So here we are again. Me. Unicorns. Parents. In complete silence. Nothing to say until... "Will you pick already?" questioned one of the unicorns. I knew straight away. Not this one. Then another one said, "Yeah girly, we've been waiting here in silence for over twenty minutes now and my legs are killing me" I raised one of my blond eyebrows. This was not true at all. All unicorns do all day is stand about practising magic. I looked hopefully at the three left. One was barely white and had flies buzzing round him. The next was also a no as she had probably taken some of my mothers lipstick and smeared it on her face, where, supposedly her lips should of been. Then the last one. Oh, it was worth the wait! Even though her head was hanging low and her silky mane was covering her face I knew this was the one for me. Slowly, I took in a deep breath and said, "This one." everyone gasped. "Why, my lady, you do not want this trouble maker. She was caught trying to escape from the stables only yesterday." It was the stable boy. Then he pointed near her tail. "So for her own health we had to use a red hot poker." This time it was my turn to gasp. Near the unicorn's beautiful, snowy white tail, there was a pink patch. I held my hand close to it. It was still burning deeply into the unicorn's skin. My eyes started to brim with tears. I know I said at the beginning that I didn't care for the unicorns. Now, well, I guess I just understand them a bit more. I had made up my mind. I was leaving this kingdom for good. I took the rope that was attached to the unicorn and marched off to the stables.
I must of been in there for hours because by the time I had tacked up my unicorn it was dark. Before I got on to her I asked, "Did you really try to escape from here?" She replied with a dull, "Yes." "Why?" "Because they treated me like dirt." "Why?" "Because my father killed the previous king." I thought about this. My grandfather got killed after a unicorn fell of a cliff ledge with him. I turned my head and closed my eyes. I missed grandpa so much. Then the unicorn spoke up, "But I have one question to ask you," I looked up. "Why are you running away from all this?" "You guessed that I was running away with you." She smiled and nodded her head. "It's because, I want a father who is sensible and cares for me and I want a mother who cooks and cleans and doesn't say the same things every day." Then I started to weep. I hugged the unicorn as if I had known her for years. Then she suddenly said, "Then what are we waiting for?!" I smiled. She smiled. We smiled. "But, what are you going to call me?" I thought. Then said, "Stella." We both giggled. We were going to travel as friends. As family. Travel around My World.
