The last couple of chapters have been all doom and gloom so hopefully this will be a bit cheerier. It's not very long but this is what my imagination produced after spending half an hour gardening. This and the last part were going to be one big part but I decided to separate them to make more sense! Here goes…
Mid December 1850 somewhere near London
Phillipa woke up the next morning feeling rather cheery despite the conditions. She had had a peaceful sleep but still woke up early. It wasn't until her feet hit the cold floor that she remembered the recent events and in particular the night before. But it was alright; she had a plan. Phillipa slipped on her taupe skirt and blue blouse. With it she wore her brown boots and special cog necklace that her father had found. It was very beautiful with a heavy pendant on a piece of soft leather. Phillipa knew she had to look presentable if she wanted to get anywhere. She skipped down the stairs and met her Mother at the bottom. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?" Phillipa told her Mother that she was going to see Molly before waving goodbye and leaving through the door. As she rounded the corner she spotted the tiny shop just ahead of her. She was nervous but also very excited. Molly and Phillipa had been best friends at school. When Molly left she went to work with her sister Ava. As Phillipa entered the tiny shop a bell rung to announce her arrival. Molly greeted her excitedly. "How are you?" She began before asking loads of questions that Phillipa didn't have time to answer. "How's work? Where are you working? Looking forward to Christmas? How are your parents keeping? And your Gran? Your Gran makes the best biscuits! Have you had any lately?" When she finally stopped Phillipa was able to speak to her. "Actually that's what I wanted to ask you about..." "Biscuits?" "No, I needed to ask you about work!" And so Phillipa explained the situation and Molly listened sympathetically. Just after Phillipa had explained, Ava walked over to greet her. Her customer left smiling, she was clearly happy with her purchase. Molly took Ava to the side to tell her exactly what she, herself, had been told. Ava thought for a moment before returning, with Molly, to speak to Phillipa. "We are a small shop, you know. And not always that busy. However, with Christmas fast approaching we could use an extra pair of hands. If you want to come and work for me I can only keep you on until you find some other work. But I will have to let you go next summer at the latest. I will pay you fairly and keep you busy but they are the only promises I can make! Is that alright for you?" "Yes of course!" "Well then arrive here at seven sharp tomorrow! And good luck, Phillipa!" "Thank you!" Phillipa gave the two sisters a hug each and then left the shop feeling content. "Mum, Mum, guess what!" Called out Phillipa as she ran into the small kitchen. Her mother turned around to look at her daughter. "What? Has something happened?" Phillipa nodded! "I've got a job, Mum! I'm going to be a textilier!
