"Turns out.", Jonny started, "I've only broken my left arm, and my right leg. It's the way it hit me, you see."
He seemed completely calm about the whole scenario. I mean, it had shaken me and Kay up more than him!
"But I told the doctor about this competition, and he said I wouldn't be able to compete!", He grinned a cheesy grin, "But, knowing me, I told him to get stuffed!"
Doctor Jason said he wanted to keep Jonny in for one more day, to do some final tests and stuff. Then he would send him home with a crutch.
I had just noticed the date on my phone, August 12th. Time was ticking before the Skate Off. Then I imagined how much winning that money would help. Maybe, just maybe, I could go to visit my mom in New York. Maybe all three, no sorry, FOUR of us could go. Me, Kay, Jonny and Kelly.
It had been raining more than usual lately, and I just hope they postpone the competition, for Jonny's sake. Even though it was about 2 months away, none of us believed that Jonny would be well enough to compete, including Jonny himself. He wouldn't admit it, but you could see it in his eye every time he spoke about it.
Me and Kay went back to Jonny's at around 06:30. I wandered around aimlessly for a while, and went into the study. I rummaged around on the desk and found a small black sketch pad. I flicked to the back and found writing. No. LYRICS. I sat down in the chair and cleared my throat.
"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think your not. You never know how strong you are until it's the only choice that you have left.
I wish, I wish you the best in your life. Cause even when its hard for me to breath, your not there, no no. You're not there.
Why'd you have to do what you do best. Break my heart. Again.
You think you know what to do. You walk around, with your held high, yeah! Without a care, yeah! Cause you don't give a damn, about anyone but yourself! I'm not really sure how how to cope but, oh hell, I'll try! Have you told him about me? No. OF COURSE YOU'VE NOT. Did you tell him just what, what we used to do? Don't you dare, make me, feel bad."
Wow! I didn't know Jonny wrote music! I mean, he's so laid back. I didn't think he had it in him to write such powerful lyrics. I picked up a faded yellow acoustic guitar, and began to strum along. Little did I know, that Kay was standing at the door, watching and listning.
The next day we went to go and pick Jonny up from the hospital. We got there and back by taxi. We told Jonny we had a surprise for him.
We arrived back home at about 1:00 in the afternoon. When the surprise was ready, we laid the table, and sat down to eat.
"Awesome!", Jonny said, "How did you know?"
We had: hot dogs, burgers, fries (or chips, according to Jonny), bacon, eggs, chocolate cake and sandwiches
"Can I have some more Governor?" I joked, putting on an English accent.
We all laughed, and then we all started doing impressions! Once we were half way through eating, Jonny tapped his can of coke with his crutch.
"Right." Announced Jonny.
"Left." Kay mocked.
"Shut it sweetheart." Smiled Jonny fondly.
"That's me babe." She replied, grinning.
"Look, what I was about to say, before I was RUDELY INTERRUPTED!" Said Jonny.
Kay winked at him.
"I have a plan for Christmas.", He announced, "I'm gonna get rid of the study, and just put the desk and the guitar in the corner", he waved vaguely to the corner with his good arm, "and make the old study my room. And THEN I had a brainstorm. I want to re decorate your rooms as a Christmas present. So I think we should all do each others rooms, but in secret. So, me and Red do Kay's room, Red and Kay do mine and me and Kay do Red's."
We all agreed to this plan and the next day, me and Jonny went down to the nearest DIY shop, to pick out some wallpaper for Kay's room. Jonny couldn't carry much, so I had to do all of the heavy lifting. When we got back we found Kay in her room packing up her things.
"Going somewhere?" I asked her sarcastically.
"Haha.", She smiled, "Back to da homeland!" She said in a Jamaican accent.
So we got to work, taking down posters and covering furniture and unscrewing the door knobs. We got a pinky-purple wallpaper with a shiny affect. It looked so cool, I was almost jealous! The next day we swapped over, so it was me and Kay doing the work this time. We had ordered the paint from a specialist, who was a qualified interior designer. I didnt even know that that was a type of qualification! We where doing a graffiti look for Jonny. We where going to strip on wall and pray there's brick under it. We painted first, and that got a bit messy! Me and Kay had a paint fight, getting paint splatters all over the wall! But, luckily, it looked pretty cool.
"You know.", Began Kay, "I'v had soo much fun with you guys. All this, it's a dream."
"More than a dream." I said.
I looked at her, she looked at me, we looked at the mess.
"Er... we better get a move on."
"Yeah."
She left the room to get water, and on the way out, she ruffled my hair, completely messing it up. But it didn't matter.
She was right, this was a dream come true!
