I paced around the corridor, I tried to sit still, but I couldn't. I don't know why I was so worried. I wanted him to pull through, of course I did, but I wasn't so sure that he would. Suddenly, a doctor emerged from the room, and said:
"You can see him now."
I burst into the room, to see Robbie. He was lying there, practically motionless. I slowly walked over to him, followed by Kay. Jonny just stood at the door. Staring. I sat on the side of the bed and smiled at him.
"Its Ok, man. You're Ok." I said, softly.
"I'm not.", He replied, his voice sounded hoarse and dry, "I'm gonna die."
A tear ran from his eye.
"They've all been talking about it, I heard them. I'm not stupid."
"What about the bullet? They can get it out of you, right?" I asked, I was getting panicky now.
"I want you to switch the machine off.", He said, looking into my eyes, "In a minuet. Pull the plug."
"No!", I cried, "I won't... can't!"
I ran out of the room, and fell to my knees, the doctor noticed me, and ran over, to see if I was Ok.
"He wants me to switch him off!" I cried.
The doctor looked at me.
"Listen to me, Robert is in allot of pain. If that's what he wants, then don't you think it would make him happy?"
I got to my feet and walked back into the room. Kay and Jonny were sitting on the bed, laughing. I smiled. Robbie noticed me, and said:
"It's Ok, Red. You don't have to if you don't want to..."
"No, I will." I interrupted.
Kay gave him a kiss on the cheek, and hugged him.
"I never stopped loving you Kay", Robbie said, "We were good once? Weren't we?"
She responded by kissing him, properly this time, on the lips. The it was Jonny. He looked shy and timid. Two traits that were not usual to Jonny's personality. He smiled at Robbie and hugged him. Then, Robbie gestured over to his Yankees cap.
"I want you to have this", He said to Jonny, "You're a Yankees fan? Right?"
Jonny laughed.
"Of course!"
He wasn't lying.
Then it was me that was left. I knew this wasn't going to be easy. We hugged, and then, he pulled me closer and whispered something in my ear.
"I will. I promise." I said to Robbie.
Kay and Jonny had no idea what was said, but it was better that way.
"You ready?" I asked Robbie about to pull the plug on the machine.
"Yeah." He answered, with a tear running from his eye.
"Say hi to James Dean for me." I said.
Then I did it. No one said a word. The sound of the machine was echoing through the room. What had I done?
