Chapter 4

I sit down at the table in the cafeteria, setting my tray on the table happily. I feel better after knowing what is up with Kendall. I haven't told anyone what he's been up to, though, for the fear of hurting him. He hadn't said not to tell anyone, but I am not about to start something by using that for my backup. Nichole sits down beside me, a bit grumpily. She had been exceedingly curious as to what Kendall had told me. She is always sticking her nose in where it doesn't belong. Most of the time it's funny, but right now it just annoys me because I know she is trying to make me feel guilty. Kate sits down in front of me, smiling broadly. "Guess who I met," she tells Nichole and I. "Ross Lynch!" I say instantly, not even half kidding. A lucky ducky like Kate is always meeting celebrities randomly. "No way," Kate laughs. "I wish. Guess again." "Me," Nichole says, giving her a smug smile. "I've known you for ages, moron," Kate replies, rolling her eyes playfully. "It was James Green. Did you know that he's practically Carlos' best friend?" I stare at her in shock. "Carlos Porter's best friend?" Nichole asks, equally shocked, though she looks a bit excited, too. When Kate nods, I scoff. "What?" Kate asks, looking startled. "James isn't bad. He just doesn't know when to stop. He's actually really funny." I roll my eyes. "I still don't like him. I don't understand why Carlos would, either," I reply. Kate shrugs, as if it doesn't matter how I feel, anyway. Nichole look up and her brown eyes brighten slightly. "Look who it is!" she says. I follow her gaze and spot Kendall. Kendall Williams. In the cafeteria. For the first time in what feels like a year. "Hey, girls," Kendall greets us, sitting down on my other side. "So you decided to pay attention to us for once," Kate grunts without looking at him. She picks up her fork and pushes her food around on the plate. I feel Kendall flinch slightly and I shake my head, exasperated. I can't reply, though, because that will involve me betraying Kendall's secret. "WASSUP?!" I jump when I hear a loud greeting from behind me. I turn my head and see Carlos walking over to me with Logan and... Great. James. "Hey, Carl," Kate says, smiling at him, her annoyance toward her brother forgotten. "How's life?" Logan asks, sitting on Kate's side while Carlos takes the seat on her other side. "Great!" Kendall was the one that answers. Very shocking to me, but then again, almost anything is shocking to me after the James thing. I can't resist glancing at Logan. He is already looking at me. He smiles softly at me and I look away, blushing. "Hi, James." I hear Kate greet him. I look over at her and see she has a flirty smile on her face. "Hey. Kate, right?" James asks, sitting on the other side of Logan. Kate nods, looking pleasantly surprised that he knows her name. I bite my lip hard and look down at my food, suppressing my anger only barely. Kate is such a flirt, so she'd easily be able to return fire to James' flirting. I groan inwardly, knowing all too well where this would go if I don't stop it. But how can I stop it? Kate would probably hate me forever if I did anything about it. She hates when I butt in on her love life. I just wish she'd realize that, if I didn't get involved, she'd have had her heart ripped out several times. "Are you ok?" Kendall whispers in my ear, too quiet for the others to hear. I realize that I'm clenching my fork so hard that my hand is turning white. I nod, not at all convincingly. "I'm just not hungry. I'm gonna head on to class," I say, standing up and carrying my tray to the trash can. It's true; my appetite is completely gone, thanks to James. "Do you want me to come?" Kendall calls after me. I shake my head and keep walking. I toss my food and head out into the hallway, feeling incredibly sick.
