Chapter 9

"Brothers," Kate sighs as she watches Kendall disappear out the door. "I'm glad I don't have one," I say, laughing. "That's why Nichole and you are so lucky," Kate replies, before turning and heading into the living room again. "Hey, it can't be that bad," I say as I sit down on the couch, watching the previews before the movie flash by. "It is bad, trust me. He is constantly pranking me and teasing me," Kate complains. "You do that stuff to him, too!" I protest, smiling at her. "Well, yeah! Because he starts it!" Kate replies, a flash of annoyance in her blue eyes. "Suuure," I say playfully. "Seriously!" Kate says, looking even more annoyed. "Do you honestly expect me to just not fight back?" I start laughing. "Ok, ok. I see your point." "It's even worse when your brother flirts with your best friends," Kate mutters, ignoring my laughing. I shake my head, amused. I know Kendall wasn't flirting. He never flirts. He just enjoys playing around with me... I hope, at least. I shake my head again and push the thought away. "Still, it would be fun to have a sibling of any kind," I say, a bit bitterly. "Really?" Kate laughs. "Because I think no siblings is a wonderful thought." I shake my head side to side quickly, making my hair whip side to side. I stop and push the hair out of my face as Kate goes on. "Yeah, right," Kate sighs. "It must be nice not having to share your life with anyone." "You're not sharing your life completely," I say, puzzled. "It's like having a friend that's blood-related to you." I'm determined to get her to see the positive side of this. Kate smiles faintly, giving up. "I guess so. I still think you and Nichole are lucky, though," she replies, and then pauses for a moment. "Where *is* Nichole?" I look around the living room. "I have no idea," I say as I stand up. "I'll go check the game room." I walk through the kitchen out to the game room, nearly running into Nichole as I arrive. "Oh- Hi, Sam!" Nichole says cheerfully. Is that fear in her eyes? "Where have you been?" I demand without returning the greeting. "Um, right here..." Nichole replies awkwardly. "Well, I went outside for a moment because I could have sworn I saw something. Then I came back in because I couldn't find it and I saw Kate and Kendall fighting, so I just stayed here until they were done." I frown slightly. She doesn't seem to be lying, but... "What about just now?" I ask, but she has already started walking away from me. Either she didn't hear me, or she's ignoring me. I guess she didn't hear me, because she glances back over her shoulder and says, "Come on!" before racing the rest of the way through the kitchen and disappearing around the corner. I sigh and go after her without pressing the issue. As I step in the living, Kate glances at me questioningly. I just shrug, as if it wasn't a big deal, and sit down beside her. "What happened?" Kate whispered, apparently dying for an explanation. "She just said she went outside, came in and saw you and Kendall fighting, so she waited until you got through before attempting to come in," I whisper back. Kate looks confused. "But what about after that? She could have come in instead of waiting." I shrug again. Kate frowns and leans back, looking at the TV. I glance at Nichole, whom is sitting down on the other side of Kate, completely oblivious to our conversation. Or is she just pretending to not hear? No, I am definitely just imagining it all. I mixed reality and thoughts together too easily. My imagination is too big for my own good. I turn back to the movie and force myself to focus on it. Soon enough, I forget about it all. For now, at least.
