You know what the worst feeling in the world is? It's that feeling when you know that no matter how hard you try, you can't succeed. Your heart just sinks.

Well this was one of those times.

The stars were shining in the sky and the moon was reflecting off of all the raindrops in the clearing behind my house. Every evening I go for a walk, the same route and the same time, even if it's snowing. But today was different. I felt as though I was being watched, but I stupidly had too much pride to turn back a spoil my tradition.

I carried on, until I reached the edge of the clearing, crossing the small bridge and entering the forest. The trees towered over me and the rain started drizzling down.

It was then that I heard it.

A low whistling, it sounded close, and it made my skin crawl.

Then I heard it again, much closer.

It was at this moment that I heard a third whistling and felt breath on the back of my neck, so I ran.

I ran faster than Usain Bolt, through the forest, deeper into the green abyss of the woodland. But I came to a flying halt.

I'd reached the river with no crossing.

My heart sank. The footsteps got closer. And I had nowhere left to run.
