'Can you catch a mermaid?' She says from up above. 'Not for you, my darling,' Her father says with love.
I watch beneath the surface, Her hand entwined with his, Alone beneath the churning sea, With froth and foam and fizz.
'But Daddy, see, I want one now!' He chuckles at her pleas, And grandly states: 'I'll try for you!' His oath; what he decrees.
My hair splays all around me, And I watch them as they talk, Envy both their human legs, Oh! If I could walk...
They want to catch a mermaid then, It won't be me they catch, I'd rather live alone but free, It won't be me they snatch.
'Darling, there's a problem here, A mermaid should be free.' The father speaks again to her, I listen close to he...
'To capture one and take it home, Is cruel and we are not.' The little girl gives solemn nods, And off the boat she trots.
Humanity surprises me, I swim away from dock, Letting happiness creep free, A welcome, joyful shock.
