I walked through the dark bedroom and threw my now heavy bag on the floor next to my bed. I walked over to the window and looked out. I sat on the window seal and pressed my face up against the warmed glass that has been washed in sunlight all day long. I looked up and saw that the night was studded with a billion white diamonds. I was lost with fascination in the moon's glory and brightness. It was full, and bright white. My mind drifted away from me far away. Away from the house, the lake, and even the country. I was in my own place. My own specail place. My dreams were disturbed by a distant howl. A soft lonesome howl.

I instantly responded stood up and opened the window. I listened more closely to the howl. It was soft and then escalated into a beautiful harmony with another howl. The two howls intertwined and told a sad story. One howl was empty and lonely, and the other one was filled with sorrow and worry. I could barely fathom the idea of some one being sad at this hour at night. It was too perfect.

I recognized one howl. Andrew. And the other I believe was Dan. I didn't know.

I discreetly got up and walked toward my door. James met me half way.

"Who is that?"

"Andrew and some one else," I said rushing toward the door.

I threw open the already broken door and shifted. I felt my bones stretch and twist in weird ways and before I knew it I was a pure white wolf. James shifted to and flanked me.

Another howl ripped through the air and I ran faster to catch up to Andrew. I dodged ferns and trees and ended up in a tiny clearing. The grass was brown and crispy and dead. I walked a little forward cautiously. It's very hard to sneak up on prey in this field. I saw a dark brown wolf baying.

"What is it Andrew," I asked out of breath.

"Dan can't come home," he gasped before letting another howl rip through his teeth.

"What do you mean 'can’t'?"

Andrew just kept howling in the direction of Dan.

"Andrew!" he kept howling. "Andrew answer me," I snarled in my big alpha voice.

He hesitated and then spoke, "Dan went to join his brother's pack as you know, but when he got there they didn't recognize him. They were so consumed in there sadness that they didn't even know that they were fighting their brother-"

"Fighting," I interrupted.

"Yeah, the whole pack treated Dan as a dangerous outsider. They beat him up pretty good. He was on his way back, he left a trail of blood where ever he went, when coyotes and other scavengers started to follow him. He rested one night and he got attacked by the pack of coyotes. Of course he fought them all off but he didn't have the strength to walk any farther."

"He's dead!"

"No no no no. He's alive, but just barely. I'm gonna' go get him. Help him home of I can. I'm not sure if he's gonna' make it."

"No, you're not. I'm going to get him. You need to watch over the pack."

"No you need to watch the pack."

"No you are. He's my best friend."

"I'll come with you then. You can't go alone."

"I'll go with her," James offered. I kinda forgot he was there. I wouldn't mind if he came. "You need to watch over your pack, Andrew. I can provide protection and I'm pretty smart. I wouldn't do anything stupid."

I looked at Andrew with hopeful eyes. Andrew pondered the thought of me going with James. "Fine you can go with him. But if you don't come back in three days time. I will send both packs to go find you. And-"

I bolted toward the woods before he could finish saying anything. James was flanking me in a matter of no time. I stopped in the middle of the woods on top of a stump and let out a howl.

"I'm coming Dan," I whispered to myself. I listened and caught by breath before I heard a howl off in the near distance. I tore off in that direction. I passed tall green pines and dark grey rocks while the wind ruffled my fur and chilled me.
