I once found an enormous egg To which I grew very attached But it was not a normal egg; As I found out when it hatched

Instead of out popping a bird A gorgeous cheeky chick Out emerged a fearsome creature As subtle as a brick

Flapping, helpless, vulnerable This little monster wriggled free Of the confines of the shell And then came straight for me!

I was shocked at being attacked By this tiny creature covered in scales But I couldn't help but laugh out loud When it tripped over its tail

It looked so undignified Landing in an untidy heap My beautiful bouncing baby dragon Terror of baby sheep

We lived on a farm, carefully... Or I would end up with roast lamb I fed my dragon some bits of toast (he was rather partial to jam)

When it came to naming him I honestly had not a clue But because of his sapphire scales I decided to call him Blu

Not the most impressive name For a relative of the crocodile But he didn't mind, he was happy He always made me smile

After a week I noticed that My baby couldn't fly His little wings looked strong enough So I couldn't work out why

Blu didn't know he was a dragon Even though he could breathe fire He thought he was an average human But filled with a strange desire

I had to explain to him then That he wasn't a human at all You'd never see a scaly human Who was 40 foot tall!

Poor Blu, it was quite a shock To learn of his identity But then he decided to put it aside And carry on living with me

But he grew obsessed with flying Excited at using his wings Then one day he finally managed it Flew away to better things

My baby Blu... He left the nest I loved him so much! But at least he kept his promise To always keep in touch

I get postcards sent to me From Africa, Italy, Spain And he sends me messages When he's resting on a plane

I miss my little dragon child But he's off exploring the world I proud of how, after some effort His glorious wings unfurled

He has terrible claws, fearsome teeth And golden eyes that stare He can breathe tall towers of fire To singe off all your hair

But I still love my scary dragon He's not actually that bad In fact I think he's the greatest dragon That I have ever had!
