Part two.
Lygeia really didn't know what else to tell Clove. The young pup was full of questions, and Lygeia was only so full of the answers that he sought. If he asked one more question... "Mum?" Clove yipped, attempting to regain her attention. "How do you know that our home is going to be destroyed?"
Lygeia growled. She might love her pups, but if Clove spoke one more word, she'd bite off his tail. Well, maybe not his entire tail, just the tip hairs so he'd be quiet. Or maybe not. "I don't know yet, Clove," she growled. "I really don't."
Clove sighed and slinked back, laying his ears down. Why couldn't he understand that she was as confused as he was? Why couldn't he see that Lygeia wasn't well? It bewildered her! Why the questions? Why the demands?
Lygeia snarled, though at no particular wolf. It wasn't her fault that she was mentally ill! It was Dreyl's! It was his fault that she had gone insane! It was his fault for getting killed!
Wasn't it...?
Sirif, one of the pack betas, caught up to Lygeia, slowing enough to be padding beside her. "I'm guessing you're about to have one of your moments." he said. He said it more as a statement, and not an estimation. This slightly irritated her. "What gives you that idea?" she spat. Sirif gave a smirk. He knew that he was getting on Lygeia's nerves. It was his job. "Just a hunch."
Sirif continued to keep Lygeia's pace, though he was careful not to step anywhere near where her paws were to be placed. He knew that if he did, he'd most likely be straight in her line of fire. Bloody crazy she-wolf...
As Sirif pulled away and slowed back to behind the pack, Lygeia continued to lead on, thinking to herself.
Where could she take the pack? Where was safety? How long did they have before something came after them? Other packs, other creatures...they were possible enemies. They were definite enemies. But why was she afraid?
The last time another pack had attacked hers, many wolves had died. It was brutal... It was a nightmare... It was the day that Dreyl had died. Lygeia closed her eyes, trying to push the memory from her mind. It hurt her when she thought about it. About how her mate for life had been killed. His guts torn from him by teeth and claws. Why did it have to be him?
Lygeia was driven mad by her own questions, driven mad by how she couldn't understand who would do such a thing...why they would do such a thing.
And it killed her inside, too.
