Wonder What Went Wrong

Look, look in that mirror,
And wonder what went wrong.
The images, they shimmer,
And nothing lasts for long.

Before the veil of clouds
She rose, as lovely as the sun,
They all did lover her, all the crowds,
Before the night was done.

Betrothed to thee that summers eve,
She offered you her hand,
In mind-lost panic you did bereave,
The lady from the land.

Before the crowds, the ruined deed,
Spoke volumes more than shown,
Broken word and broken creed,
You left her there, alone.

The long, long nights that came to follow,
Did nought to ease nor aid,
With heartfelt words, your body hollow,
You grieved the twice-cursed maid.

So look thee long and look thee close,
Into that mirrored glass.
Life has played you one great hoax,
And you did fail to pass.
