There was a cage of crystal glass, That sat upon a field of grass, In which a young girl sat confined, Kept far away from all mankind.
And here she stayed each night and day, Dreaming of worlds far away, Hoping one day she'd be free, To leave her cage with joyful glee.
There she remained in loneliness, Without a trace of happiness, The world simply passed her by, With no one there to hear her cry.
Until one sunny, cloud free morning, Where someone came without a warning, Skipping with cheer through the field, Towards the spot where she lay sealed.
A young boy of about her age, Wandered idly by her cage, In which a young girl's heart near stopped, Not caring from where this boy popped.
She raised a fist and battered walls, Crying out her desperate calls, Yet the boy remained ignorant, And walked on by indifferent.
She cried and cried to no avail, Knowing deep down she had failed, That she had let her last chance slip, As her glass tears began to drip.
Then suddenly the boy did stop, And asked her if she'd like to swap, The land grew still with those mere words, Silencing all the singing birds.
Unsure of what the boy had meant, Not trusting the young boy's intent, The girl encased in glass sat still, Inner struggle about to spill.
Would she like to swap indeed, Would she like to at last be freed, In exchange for this strange, young boy, Whose life she would then now destroy?
She bowed her head in complete shame, Hoping she would not be to blame, And slowly gave a mournful nod, Knowing she would be cursed by God.
With that very simple action, Where she moved her head a fraction, The boy smiled with saddened eyes, Grabbed the glass and began to prise.
The boy disappeared from her sight, Lost within a dazzling light, The walls around her began to dissolve, No longer around her did they revolve.
She found herself out in the air, From where she jumped back with a scare, For inside the cage sat the boy, His stare as soulless as a toy.
Despite that she had found release, Her heart had yet to find true peace, Despite being freed from the glass, She remained alone in the grass.
