I watched them play as I sat on my wheelchair. My best friend, Dana, was playing one-on-one with Simon, our best guy-friend. I wish I could've been playing with them but I had broken my leg a week ago. Instead, I kept score and cheered for Dana, because girls rule of course. Sadly, Dana was losing and my cheers turned into groans. "I win!" Simon cheered and punched his fist in the air. There was barely any sweat on him compared to Dana. "No fair," Dana huffed, "You're too fast for me." I giggled as Dana drew in big breaths of air. Simon was still doing his happy dance, ignoring Dana. Then he saw her crouched next to my wheelchair. He grinned and came over. "What's wrong Dana? You look all sweaty and gross." "Shut up," Dana said and Simon laughed. "HELLO CAMPERS!" a voice boomed on the intercom,"We'll be having a special race this evening! Get in groups of three and participate!" The intercom fell silent and we all looked at each other. Dana smiled. "Well we already have our group of three. Let's go sign up." "Wait!" I said, "Are you including me in your group? I'll just slow you down!" "You won't slow us down Kelly," Simon said, "You'll just make the experience all the better." "But-" "No buts!" Dana placed a finger on my lips and winked. "We'll beat everyone with you." Simon nodded. "I'll go sign us up." "No wait!" I called but Simon was already jogging away. ••• I waited nervously at the third check point. We were all split into three sections and I was obviously last. Dana was doing the swimming section, where you had to swim from one checkpoint to another. Simon was currently doing the bike race, where you biked against others on a mountain trail. I was chosen to do the running section of the race. I was to run half a mile to the finish line. We were a good team and had a good chance of winning, if I weren't in a wheelchair. Well, at the moment I was on my crutches. I moved about nervously as the first bikers began to appear in the distance. I let out a loud cheer as Simon appeared to be maintaining the lead. He set down his bike and began to jog towards me. His face was sweaty with hard effort and flushed by the exertion. He smiled at me and gave me a high-five. "I won't make it...," I told him. "You will," he said the swung me up in a swift gesture,"Up you go." he picked me up and carried me princess style. I wrapped my arms around his neck and blushed. "What are you doing?" "Winning a race," he answered. He began to jog with me in his arms. I looked back to see other campers staring at us. "Umm...," I began,"This is awkward." "It's damn right awkward," Simon said,"You're so heavy." I blushed and he laughed. I punched his shoulder and looked back to see others catching up. I clung to Simon in anticipation. "They're coming! They're coming!" "Relax," He grunted. He began to speed up and more sweat trickled down his face. The other campers were slowly approaching us but the finish line was only a few meters away! I bounced in Simon's arms as he sprinted the last few steps and we crossed the finish line. There was a loud roar of cheers and whistles. I noticed that I was smiling hugely. "We did it! We did it!" I yelled giddily. "We sure did," Simon said. He bent down and kissed my cheek. Warmth sprouted on my cheek and spread across my body. The funniest thing was, it didn't hurt, I wanted him to do it again. "Even if you do have a broken leg." I looked up at him expectantly, with my big puppy eyes. "We won. Where's the prize?" Simon smiled, reading my thoughts clearly. "Right here." he bent down but this time his lips met mine in a soft kiss. "Love you, Kelly." I nodded. "Me too."
