I had to go to BMW Motorrad in Guildford to get something on Saturday, and was astonished to find banners and BMW flags all over the show, and a beautiful woman directing me to a parking spot. There was I, sweaty, helmet hair and unshaven, with the ultimate of feminine beauty, frantically looking at her sheet, hoping my name would materialise without my prompting. Not as much as I was hoping MINE was on the list..but no.. It was an event to sell Toys to the 'Loaded Boys'. I smirked as I wondered in to the showroom, looking like I was in the book, but possibly not on the same page as the middle aged men and woman who were fussing around the motorbikes selling the dream of freedom and power. I could see the turmoil on most of the faces. The woman standing looking 'aghast' at what their nearest and dearest were spending the kids' inheritance on, while the men had that far-away blissful look of a child in a toy store. I believe they sold quite a few over the day. And what I felt, and understood, was the way Motorcycle travel is marketed as something that we can all get involved in. Unless you look, you wouldn't believe the amount of literature out there, not only on the journey, but everything that you would need for your dream. And, remember, most of those who do this, tend to do it alone, or with special friends, or a spouse. THAT is the dream they sell.
But, it's a dream you can do, and many do.
