Children sit on the edge of the pier Legs dangling Tired eyes and lips stained with saccharine sweet candyfloss promises Wisps of sugary happiness that only last for a second But are remembered for ever The fairground, a night of laughter That sharp tangy jolt through your stomach And then the tears behind the smiles The sadness underneath a clown's wig

I dare you, he says To ride that scariest of rides; the loop de loop of life, a walk on the wild side. Steal that man's money, ruin his smug smile You need it more than him, you poor fairground child.
