Why are you so distant, yet so near?
It feels like an ocean lies between us,
But we're holding hands,
Arms stretched over crashing waves
With our fingers interlocked,
Cold waters biting beneath us.
We barely see each other
Beyond the sand storm that swirls
Around two souls lost in the heat.
I can make out your shadow,
But no longer your face,
Not beneath this desert sun
That glares like a search lamp, calling.
And after midnight, it is silent
Like a beacon your light is shining,
But it's too dark to distinguish north,
And far too still to follow the winds,
And nothing is glittering elsewhere,
No constellations in our galaxy,
To map where your lantern lies
In the ebony blanket of evening skies,
And again I'm left with that feeling,
Still reaching for that single star,
That glints like coins underwater,
Thrown inside a well of dreams.
You are both so near,
And yet so far.
