“Why the hell did you break Sophie’s arm?!” Screeched Esme in a soft voice trying to keep quiet; presumably trying to not wake me.

“I didn’t do it on purpose” said a boy who I guessed was Taylor. “I was trying to stop her from running away and –once again- I forgot how strong I can be”

“You do realise that we need Sophie. Not a broken arm” came a sarcastic voice. I'm guessing this was Dan because his voice was slightly higher.

Then I heard a high pitched beeping sound. It was coming from where they were talking.

“Shhh!” spluttered Esme “were trying not to wake Sophie you know”

“Sorry” it was Joe “anyway, William’s outside wanting to talk to us, he sent me a message”

“Fine” snapped Esme “come on”

I lay still in the bed wondering what to do next. What did Dan mean by We need Sophie? What could they possibly want with me? Why was Esme –of all people- involved with Dan, Taylor and Joe? I really had no clue what was happening.

If only my dad was here, he would be able help me. This was the first time since the anniversary of my dad’s death that I actually wished he was still here. My dad worked with people who he called “bad”. He never really interacted with us as a family but was still there when we needed him. Then when my mum died because of a hit and run my dad became more distant to the extent where I could go months without talking to him. Then one day I came home and he was gone and saw later on the news that he died in an explosion in a library. He must have needed a book to help with this project for the “bad” people. No police ever came to my door to take me to a children’s home so I decided to live as normal whilst grieving for both of my parents just like the months where my dad never talked to me. A tear came down my cheek, I never cried about my parents before. Not even when they died.
