A good friend of mind has a teenage son. As his dad is not around and he was having girl trouble his mum asked me to have a word, man to man. It turns out that he had been dumped by his girlfriend of over a year for another guy and he was heart broken. During our conversation I was trying to think of things to console him and the classic phrase better to have lost in love than to never have loved at all entered my head. Thankfully I was not stupid enough to say it out loud. I have been in his shoes and I can honestly say that even with all the positive stuff, I would much rather have never met my ex than go though the suffering after we split up. In the end I told him he had two choices; either suck it up and move on to better things or wallow in self pity for 6 months before realising that the girl wasted 18 months of his life rather than just 12. His mum reports back that he seems to have come around, he is back to his normal self, and that my talk must have really reached him. I think it may be due to the fact that I promised to take him to a strip club for his 18th if he hasn't found another girlfriend by then. Either way he is doing better and that's what counts. Point of the story guys: lost love hurts but alcohol and a strip club are a good painkiller.
