27 February 2013

Note: this is all purely fiction.

I woke up at 4 a.m. to the racket of footsteps and voices. Today was the big day; my parents and I were moving from sunny SoCal to the frosty town of Pebble Tree, Vermont. Our ordeal was also "conveniently" placed on my birthday, August 1 (today). Hoorah. At least I was finally 17.

I got up sluggishly from the quite uncomfortable sleeping bag I spent the night in and trudged to the empty kitchen, in my empty house.

After I poured myself a bowl of cereal, I unwillingly went to bathroom to freshen up. Mom had placed my folded sweats on the lid of the toilet, trying to help out even the tiniest bit on the only birthday that she knew I wouldn't enjoy.

Mom wasn't enjoying this in the least bit either, but when Dad got a job offer that paid a lot, he immediately took it, even though it meant that we had to go across the country. Dad had been looking for jobs for what seemed like forever, so he couldn't pass this offer up. Also, Mom wasn't getting barely any customers in her custom wedding dress shop. In a nutshell, we were desperate.

I heard my parents moving in their bedroom, making sure that their suitcases had everything packed. Mom already did all that for me; she wanted me to not be in a rush on my birthday. Yet I wished that I had something to do to keep my mind off my sad thoughts—leaving my home, my friends, and all I had ever lived with.

All dressed and ready to go, I went and knocked on my parent's door. Mom opened the door and said, "Hey, sweetheart, ready to go?" "I guess so…hey, what do I do about my sleeping bag?" "Oh, I already got it while you were in the bathroom," Mom answered with a smile. She was one step ahead of me; all apart of her plan.

Dad slipped past us with all the luggage in his arms. "Taxi's here," Mom said as she started walking with me down the hall. We both stopped at all the rooms along the way to make one last scan. I grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste and at last, we were ready to leave our beloved home.

We all paused in the front doorway as we had one last look at the place. Then, we loaded our luggage and ourselves in the awaiting taxi.

We arrived at the airport and were off to catch our plane. I sat in my window seat on the plane and the flight attendant told us to buckle up in case of turbulence. As a matter of fact, there was turbulence, but only when the plane officially arrived. We were told that there was a snow storm and to stay buckled in our seat. As we landed, I got a glimpse of the white, snow-covered surface and twirling snowflakes in the air. I sure wasn't used to this.
