Chapter one:
"Anna?!" No answer. "Anna, do you read me?!" No answer. "Anna, are you stable?!"
"I read you Birdie, use my copy name remember! I just had to help Buffalo, he was wounded, copy?" "Copy, meet at district point." "Roger that." I gave a slight sigh of relief that my main girl was not down. Clicking my earpiece off, I reloaded my pistol and placed the knife onto the silencer, while whistling an old world war song. 'They'll be blue birds over, the white cliffs of Dover...." Nails- Jamie, our eye spotter- whispered under his breath to my tune. I watched him reach underneath his grubby helmet and pull out a picture of a very beautiful looking women, he kissed the photo and returned it to it's rightful place. He noticed I was looking and smiled sadly. "Luck charm?" I asked. "Roger that," he chuckled wearily. I reached in for a petite carving of a wooden heart out my boot inside, next to my Retrieve Knife, and and chucked it to Nails. "Never die knowing you left something behind," he read out the black tattooed writing inside it. I nodded and pointed to his wedding finger, he bowed his head, knowing that I was indicating that he should not miss the chance to propose to his lady. I punched him softly in the arm sympathetically, we didn't normally give hugs to our work partners, not even bear hugs, he gave me gentle one back. I rolled up my blood and mud sprinkled uniform and revealed a fancy copy of the writing from the wooden heart, however this had a small pair of broken angel wings next to it. "Why broken wings?" Kebab (Mark our radio transmitter and tech geek) frowned. "Well, why not?" I grinned, shoving my sleeve down. I was the only female on my team for that mission, the rest were split up in other groups, most of them on the boats to keep an eye out and defuse bombs at the sides. Since I was the only girl, the guys always joked with me and called me 'too ickle' in Military you don't care what people said and I knew they meant it as a joke anyway. "Birdie," Yogurt- Tom our weapon nerd- called out to me "Watch the scandal on the right." I nodded thankfully and started to hold my gun up to my shoulder. Found him. Aim. Fire. Perfect. Clean kill. Out group began to silently step on the pebbled sand, being careful if we were being spied on. "Birdie?" Star Gazer, aka Anna, reported through my earpiece "We've got target of you, we need to change meet point, how'd you copy?" "Perfect, why?" "Enemy is close on the thermal, we need to meet at section twelve, where the final two groups are, how?" "Roger that Star Gazer, over?" "Over and out." I clicked my earpiece off again and told the group and lead them towards section twelve, taking most of the likely blow from frontal fire. After half an hour of utter silence and tension, we made it at the correct section and spilt our group up then hopped into separate boats, that would lead to an exiting helicopter. "Anna!" I joyed out, she was in the most dangerous part of our objection "you mange the target?" Anna showed me Robbie, Buffalo, holding a limp piece of metal junk. "Doesn't look like much...." I frowned deeply. "Yeah, but that's how they disguised it," Anna smiled, it was a pretty good way of hiding such a deadly tracker. We worked for the AMS (American Military Service) and we were fighting in the Tongalu War. A war between the borders of the U.S and foreign countries, an immensely difficult situation, although well worth it. Me and Anna kept watch on the backlit of our boat as we were launched up in the boat, onto the helicopter. "Anna! I'll go last!" I shouted above the noise of the propellers. She gave me the okay sign and went up, I fastened up the strings of tie boat tighter on the helicopter, glanced around with my gun once more and headed up the unstable ladders. "Right," Channel- Charlie out captin for today- began. "we have no men down and target is secured, a very proud day. We will be in forge camp for ten days maximum, then we have to move. Maybe even back to HQ. In two months we will all, hopefully, be able to go back to see our friends and families again for six weeks aprox. That's all I have to say, and well done!" everyone cheered as he finished and chatted with each other about seeing the people they love. "Who you most excited to see Layla?" Anna asked me. "Eveyone, what about you?" I giggled sipping some warm water. "Same as you!" she squeaked and clapped her hands wildly. I laughed at her enthusiasm, we still had another two months to go and maybe not everyone would be alive in time to get there. I slipped out my luck charm and stroked it gratefully, it never let me down. Not since the day I found it in a pile of rubble in New Zealand. Most people, after me, got out their Luck Charms and thanked them in their own ways, we were all happy to be living at that moment, even if we knew that we could die any second. Every slight intake of breath was worth the wait.
