The runaway kids. ------------------------
Chapter 1: the beginning. *•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*
Should I be doing this? I can't help thinking as I creep silently down the stairs. Across my chest is my huge leather animal bag half packed with clothes, my iPod, phone and their chargers. I tip toe into the kitchen and a low hiss comes from the corner of the room, "Shut up manky cat." I hiss back. I sneak to the fridge and pack the five sandwiches I made earlier, ten bags of (now crushed) crisps and three bottles of mineral water. I sigh and look around the dark kitchen, time to leave my past behind me. I scribble a quick note under the light of a flash light from my bag, 'Mum and Dad. Go rot in Hell. From your daughter, yeah me Ruby.' I place it on the chopping board and make my way to the back door, picking up my penknife from the window sill on the way. All of a sudden there a low grunt from the stairs I freeze not making a noise. Loud stomping thuds to my ears from the kitchen my eyes clamp shut in fear, must be Dad up for his midnight beer. "What's this doin' 'ere?" He grumbles to himself turning the light on and fumbling around for the note that I only just wrote. "Go die in Hell. Oi! Darl come read this!" Shouts Dad at the top of his lungs, to who I presume is Mum. Quick foot steps come into the kitchen, "What you get me up for?" She moans, "Read this." "She's run away." Whispers Mum, something in my heart tells me to go and comfort her, love probably. I haven't had a single feeling for them two muppets since I was born only hate. They whisper between themselves trying not to wake Ben (my brother). He's at a strip club at the moment he told me not to snitch or I'm dead meat. I take this chance, I've got to run or well... They'll catch me! I slowly unlock the door making no noise I open the door slightly and take a step outside, thankfully I went to bed fully dressed so I'm not in my PJ's and slippers. "Losers!" I shout as I run out the house onto the deserted road. Shouts come from the house but I'm half way down the street, I'm the fastest runner in school, no one will catch me. I smile as I run around the corner and out of sight from my parents. One last curse from my house and the sound is gone, I've run away from home at last! I hold my arms out and feel the wind run through my hair, this is how I want to live. Free. I run into a small road which leads into town. I sigh and slow down knowing that my parents couldn't be bothered to follow me, they're probably glad I'm gone to be honest! I'm kind of... Well taken away from the sight in front of me, some people think that cities are scary and dangerous. Bristol mostly. But I can't agree, I've lived in Bristol all my life, 16 years. At night Bristol is pretty beautiful (what?) yeah, all the tall towers and shops are lit brightly by the window lights. It's like New York pictures, all lights and no buildings. Lovely! I stroll around the streets in my grey Hollister sweatpants and hoodie. People at school call me chav, do I give a fuck what they think? Nope. Oh I forgot to tell you something, yeah I didn't steal it or anything.... But also in my bag I have £2531! Dad keeps two thousand under a floor board in the bathroom- mine now. The five hundred and thirty one is my own savings that I keep hidden. I'm gonna need money to survive nowadays. I walk deeper into town and notice a group of teenagers hanging around by the ruined church. "Oi!" I shout at them as I walk towards them, "You talking to us?" Asks one of them who's wearing an all grey chav suit. Bit like me really. "Who else would I be talking to?" I smile slightly making small dimples appear on my flawless cheeks, "Loose the attitude missy or your dead. What you want?" He snaps while he breaths out the smoke of a cigarette. All his mates are pretty dodgy looking, I grew up with a thug Dad. I can handle some hyped up boys. "Got any gum? Forgot to brush my teeth." I run my tongue along my top row of teeth. "Sure." One of the other guys say handing me a whole packet, "Thanks." I mumble stuffing two into my mouth and chewing noisily on it. "So what you doin' round here Ruby?" Asks the main one, "How'd you know my name?" I ask suspiciously, "Same school. You punched me in the nose three weeks ago." He rises a eyebrow at me and smiles a little, "Oh yeah. You asked for it though, calling me fit and all." "Can't help it. Don't wanna waste my words on a ugly girl when I could be getting it on with you." He winks at me and raises his hand so he strokes my cheeks I push him in the chest so that he stumbles back. "Watch it. I can do worse than a bloody nose." I warn glaring at them all. He bursts out laughing but his friends stay quiet. "I'd like to see you try" he challenges. I stuff the packet of gum deep into my big pocket and walk towards Brad I think his name is. I smile slightly and strut around him checking out my chances against him, and his gang. "Why should I waste my time on a piece of scum like you?" I ask trailing my hand around his back until I'm staring him straight in the eyes, "Why shouldn't you?" "Funny guy eh?" I spit. He laughs and looks back at his worried looking friends when he turns back round his face collides with my fist taking him to the ground. "See ya, thanks for the gum!" I call as I run further down the dark street. I finally get to the place I was heading for. My best friend Josh's house. I lye down outside the door next to bins (so I'm hidden slightly) all I have to do now is wait until he's on his way to school.
