She was standing all alone
In the middle of the crowd,
While everybody pointed,
Made jokes and laughed so loud.
I saw tears sparkling in her eyes,
But she was silent through it all.
Staring at the ruthless strangers
Who knew just how to make her fall.
I glanced around the circle
As they cut and tore her down,
And I was absolutely shocked
By the malice they spread around.
But then I looked back at the girl,
Still standing isolated.
And I realized I was no better
Than the mongrels that I hated.
Because though I did not join them
In their painful, slicing words,
Neither did I try to stop them,
Or stand up for the outcast girl.
So I stepped outside the circle,
Stood right beside her now.
And I told her what to do,
And I explained exactly how.
She listened to what I said,
As I whispered into her ear.
And I knew she never spoke out before,
But she would right now, right here.
So she did what I instructed,
When I said that it was time.
And I watched her leave the box
That she created when she turned mime.
She strolled up to the taunters,
And she pushed each one aside.
She told them the day they could change her
Is the day that she would die.
And when they finally left,
Sprinted out of their pelts,
She walked right back to me,
And thanked me for my help.
