-The shapeshifter's alliances and loyalty are uncertain and the sincerity of his claims are questionable, and keep the hero off guard.
-Romantic interest/ friend/ally/buddy/magical figures
-Sometimes the shapeshifter is a catalyst whose changing nature forces changes in the hero, but the normal role is to bring suspense to the story.
-Mentors sometimes appear as shape-shifters.
-The hero often assumes the role of shapeshifter to get past an obstacle.
