CHILDHOOD part 1:
SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED: made by society
PHILLIP ARIES: worked out childhood was socially constructed and recent after 1750 industrial period He called them mini adults and used paintings as evidence. However, this is not stable evidence as paintings can be staged, doesn't show the whole 'picture' like the emotional bonds between parent and child.
PHILLIP MUSGROVE: period of childhood changes with economy and that the period of childhood is different within each culture or society (African tribes)
Today's society is child centred, for example children made toys, children have their own teachers, doctors etc etc Children have to stay in school from 5-16+ Children are protected by laws e.g. Children can't be smacked anymore.
However childhood is not all good: Child abuse Bullying New Right and Functionalists claim that because of the increase of divorces it is more likely to develop delinquents (DIVORCE and FAMILY VIEW notes)
