Demographic trends: Changes in population size and structure.
AGEING POPULATION: people living older, less kids being born.
POPULATION GROWTH:
UK POPULATION: 1901=38.2 million --> 2006=60.6 million
Low mortality rate (number of deaths per 1000 of the population per year)
Increased Life expectancy: men- 1901>46-->2005>77 Female- 1901>49-->2005>81
Low infant mortality rate: number of deaths of children under 1 yr old per 1000)
CAUSES: Advances in medicine-decrease in illnesses Advances in nutrition and healthy diets Advances in welfare measures-raised living standards
Net migration: the difference between the amount of people coming in to the UK compared to the those leaving (21% 239,000 entered the UK in 2010)
LESS BABIES ARE BORN INTO SMALL FAMILIES:
Contraception has ALWAYS BEEN AROUND, but it is now more effective and readily available.
INDIVIDUALISATION: couples are enjoying life, and are having children later on if at all
CHANGING ATTITUDES- Woman are now choosing to focus more on their careers and have children later on if at all (Sue Sharps study-1960/70's-1990's)
CHANGING OPTIONS- woman now have the option to not have kids (child free life style choice) and to focus on their careers.
CHILDLESSNESS has increased: Born in 1941-1 in 10 Born in 1961-1 in 5
ECONOMIC FACTORS: children are now becoming more expensive to raise in 2006 it cost £180,000 to raise a child.
LOW FERTILITY RATE: average number of how many children a woman has within her life time.
LOW BIRTH RATE: number of live births per 1000 of the population per year.
