FAMILY DIVERSITY part 2
RHONA AND ROBERT RAPPORT (1982)
They identified 5 different diversity types:
CULTURAL DIVERSITY CO HORT DIVERSITY LIFE STYLE DIVERSITY CLASS DIVERSITY ORGANISATIONAL DIVERSITY
ORGANISATIONAL DIVERSITY:
This refers to the different structures and roles within a family. Due to changes in life styles e.g. Increase of divorces and greater dependency on the elderly, the modern British family has become organised or structured I. Different ways. E.g. Single-parent families, reconstituted families, extended families etc
QUICK DEFINITIONS:
Single-parent families
Reconstituted families (blended families)- step families
Extended families- another member of their family lives with them e.g Nan
Single sex families- gay families
Bean pole families- close to G-parents, but don't live with them.
Singleton- lives alone
CULTURAL DIVERSITY:
This refers to how some people's religion and ethnicity effects their family structure.
E.g. Asian families (typically nuclear and extended)
Most Asian house holds are based on nuclear families. 20% are extended families (higher proportion than other groups)
Asians are more likely to marry and to marry earlier. Cohabitation and divorce is rare. Marriages are sometime arranged (V.little research done in this area)
However, criticisms:
There is often as much family diversity within ethnic groups as there is within white society.
There is a danger of ignoring cultural variation within ethnic groups e.g. Variations of religion, countries if origin, and in regions within those countries.
It is important to note that British born Asians expect more independence from their kin. Different attitudes amongst Asian groups, with Sikhs having more liberated view towards women's social position then Muslims.
African-Caribbean Families:
In 2000, nearly 50% of African-Caribbean with dependent children were lone-parent families.
AFRICAN-CARIBBEAN'S have: Lowest marriage rate Highest divorce rate Highest proportion of single (never-married) lone
Some researchers talk bout the 'problem' of the African-Caribbean family. However, this ignores the strength of wider kinship networks.
