FAMILY DIVERSITY part 3
CULTURAL DIVERSITY CARRY ON:
Multicultural families, increase in partnerships between people from different ethnic groups. Couples can face prejudice from their ethnic groups of origin.
MONOGAMY-married to one person at a time (SERIAL MONOGAMY-being married one after the other legally, while the past marriages are legally terminated)
BIGAMY- the crime of getting married again, whilst already being married
POLYANDRY- having more than one husband at a time.
CLASS DIVERSITY:
This refers to how income and cultural capital may affect lifestyle*
Lifestyle-class background affects you-accent, languages, codes and values)
EVERSLEY & BONNERJEA
Lower position = lower income. Lower income will lead to variations in living standards, housing quality and lifestyle, e.g. Low-income families are more likely to live in over crowded and substandard housing.
Lower class have kids earlier on. Higher class have kids later on.
The rich tend to inter marry in order to stop others from joing "The Club" (SOCIAL CLOSURE)
Lower class more likely to divorce.
Middle class may use au pairs or nannies to baby sit kids. Working class more likely to use friends or family. Higher classes more likely to send children to fee paying independent schools. Also more likely to board I.e live away from home.
LIFE COURSE DIVERSITY:
This refers to where different families are along stages of their life E.g. Empty nest
STAGES OF LIFE CYCLE----->FAMILY TYPE
Birth and childhood--> Nuclear
At university--> Co-habiting/Singleton
Setting up home with partner-->Cohabiting
Birth of children--> Nuclear
Middle Age-->Cohabiting/Empty nest
Old Age--> Bean pole/widow(er)/Cohabiting
Unpredictable course in contemporary society?
Greater individual choice? The increasing separation of sex, marriage and parenthood.
Divorce/lone-parent households/births outside of marriage/ cohabitation/ declining marriage rates/ increase in step families.
