FAMILY DIVERSITY part 4

COHORT:

This refers to a group of people (a cohort) who have shared common experiences of the world which have resulted in giving the cohort a similar experience of life.

For example:

Living during WW2 London children may have been evacuated, giving this cohort a similar experience of life.

Families whose children were due to enter the labour market in 1980's may be different from other families. (High rate of unemployment may have increased the length of time children were dependent on parents).

The introduction of the pill as a firm of birth control.

NEW TYPES OF DIVERSITY?

LIBERALISATION in attitudes to sexuality (gay/lesbian relationships)

Introduction to new reproductive technologies ( e.g. IVF)

LIBERAL ATTITUDES:

Idea of 'chosen families'- gay men and lesbians often see their households and even their friendship networks as being 'chosen families' (don't necessarily need ties or blood or marriage)

ROSENEIL (2005) links the development of chosen families to the break down of HETERONORM- the belief that all intimate relationships should be based on heterosexuality.

TV programmes such as friends and will and grace suggest alternative networks to traditional families. (Media has big influence)

NEW REPRODUCTIVE MEANS:

New reproductive technologies-These date from 1978 when the first 'test-tube baby' Louise Brown was born through IVF

Surrogate motherhood- where one woman carries a foetus produced by the egg of another woman.
