Chapter 3 Confusion
Derek grabs Mikey's arm as though he was protecting him but the truth was he was the one needing protecting, grabbing his young and impressionable friend gave him a tiny bit of comfort.
"Why are you boys here?....you know you are not meant to be anywhere near here" Derek was squinting to try and see the mans face before him as he recognised the voice but it was different somehow. Mikey too knew that voice but he still felt scared and hid behind Derek.
"Uh..Mr Jessop...we uh..we just got a little lost...then we heard this noise uh...thought we would see what it was sir...we better get going now....come on Mikey"
Derek was trying not to show his fear as he sensed something was not right, he could taste it, the darkness seemed darker and all was silent except for the strange noise that they could hear in the distance. Mikey didn't hesitate to turn around and try to go with Derek, he had never seen Derek act this way before and so now he was terrified.
"I don't think so boys...you have to come with me now" Derek and Mikey both were thinking to run for it but then they heard a ruffling of the bushes and then there were two more darkly figures almost circling them now. Looking closely Derek and Mikey could see Mr Jessop was standing by Mr Howe and Mr Jenkins...why were all the men from town here?
Mr Jessop was the garage owner, he was usually a friendly sort of man, always joking. Mr Howe was the local shop owner who was a bit grumpy at times but a quiet man. Mr Jenkins was the local doctor, a warm and kind man usually, but all three men were not themselves. It was them in the flesh but their presence was just not the same.
Mikey said to the men in a shaky voice "mum will be wondering where I got to sir, she will be looking for me" Mr Jessop had a smirk on his face and said "I don't think so boy" Derek then said "where are you taking us?, this ain't funny, we don't have to go anywhere with you" he thought to himself that if he acted tough and not show his nervousness that this may somehow change how the situation was going. With that Mr Howe grabbed Derek by the back of his coat and Mr Jenkins grabbed Mikey by his arm. Mr Jessop gruffly said "you know where to take them".
Derek and Mikey could hear the noise getting closer, it was now a low humming sound that made their ears pop and made their nose tingle but not a nice tingle it was kind of painful.
They were taken to the large warehouse that made up the main part of the building, there were smaller derelict buildings scattered around the area. There were old vehicles that were rusting away due to the elements eating away at them and on the areas that the grass was growing it was wild and yet sparse, like it was trying to grow but for some reason it couldn't.
As Derek and Mikey were dragged into the building the light hurt their eyes as it had been dark outside and their eyes were stinging from the dark to light that hit their eyes. Mikey was rubbing his as he looked round, and his ears were popping from the now very loud noise. Derek could make out other figures in the room...actually a lot of figures in the room. Once his eyes had adjusted he started to look at the faces, there was Mr Neville one of his teachers at school, then there was Mrs Stanley the post office lady. Derek was confused why were so many people from town here and why were they all acting so strangely?.
Mr Jessop had this dark frown as he looked at both boys and said "put them there, let's see what happens here"
Then out of the corner of Derek's eye he sees some of the figures beginning to move as though they are getting out of the way of someone. Derek watched as the figure approached and it was then that he suddenly felt a mixture of utter confusion and complete and utter relief. Derek was nervously smiling and looking a tad sheepish as Mikey too looked at Derek with a relieved look, but their smiles quickly disappeared as the man was not smiling, in fact his face was totally without emotion, not even the comfort of a blink was offered. Derek was now looking at the man with pleading eyes and said "dad...dad....what's going on?"
