2 June 2012
Lying in her doorway
The shoppers pass her by
Ignore her plea for 40p
They never wonder why
She is just a nobody to them
Not worthy of a life
They've not considered
Her life so full of strife
Her mother addicted to brown
A dad who was never there
A sister and brother too
All put into care
At 16 she left it all behind
She dreamt of oh so much
The house, clothes, boyfriend
Her dream she could touch
Then cruel reality hit her
It was gradual at first
Into the depths of poverty
She fell, her bubble was burst
No job, no support, no money
The street was her life
Life was less than funny
Some street friends
Got high to blot it out
Others would drink into oblivion
Forget what life's about
She chose to have a clear head
For she wanted to dream
Of how her life could be
So dry, warm and clean
She looks into her hat
Sat beside her on the path
£3.67 she happily counted
She smiles then laughs
I can buy a sandwich
Choccy bar and drink
Then she sees the lotto sign
She begins to frown and think
She enters the shop
She'd got used to the stares
You just get a thick skin
About how nobody cares
A £1 lucky dip
She holds in her palm
Puts it somewhere safe
Returns to her doorway all calm
The following week
She returned to the shop
Wants the ticket checked
The shop owners heart stopped
The down and out had won
What should he do?
1.2 million he announced to her
This can't be F****ing true
Now she's living her life
Just the way she meant
Built a new homeless shelter
Her money is being well spent
