It began quite suddenly

Just little things at first

She'd forget birthdays

Or what she was about to say

The words to a song

Or how to make a sponge

She left doors open

Thinking they were shut

Forget to put the washing out

Thought it was out to dry

Her condition got worse

She no longer knew things

Like putting her make up on

Making a cup of tea

How to use the hoover

How to make a stew

No more little walks

Around the neighbourhood

For she'd forget the way

Simple things that you and I

Would do without thinking

Thinking for her became too much

Her thoughts were all fuzzy

Her ideas all wrong

Dementia took her mind

Leaving her body just lost

Redundant, a mere shell

A car without a driver

She no longer knows much

A face is just a face

She sits and stares

The world causes confusion

Everything is so scary

Family can't offer support

As they are just strangers

Talking a strange way

Scaring her even more

The only solace she has

Are fragments of memories

That she holds so dear

They are the only thing

That make any sense for her

In the world of dementia
