His mother never loved him

She only wanted girls

So aged two, under the stairs

He was thrown, he was hurled

As young as he was

He knew the love was gone

For his mother was cold

Heartless for so very long

He never went to school

Or had friends of his own

No one knew he existed

It was he and the stairs alone

He once found a little teddy

A small brown fluffy bear

The only thing he owns

The bear had love to share

He often sits and listens

To happy voices in the house

He hears his mother chatting

His sisters playful shouts

His sisters were told of him

A secret never to be told

"For if you do, bad things will happen"

His mother tells with a voice of scold

Life went on, his sisters unaware

Of their brothers fighting spirit

Fading fast under the stairs

The sheer loneliness had hit

One day he listened with intent

To the school day morning rush

All the chatter and getting ready

Before he's left with the hush

But today something changed

One sister told of something she forgot

He heard her gentle footsteps

Then heard the click of the stair lock

A girl with a kind worried face

Looked upon her sad little brother

"You must run away once we've gone"

An understanding passed from one to another

With that she smiled and quickly left

She closed the door and all was still

The boy under the stairs just sat there

Left wondering...did he have the will?

He must have sat there for at least an hour

Just wondering what to do next

Where would he go?...what to say?

His mind of 7 was all perplexed

He picked up fluffy brown bear

Held him in his small hands

Stepped out of his home under the stairs

Into the hall of the house he stands

He walks around the home he never knew

He saw the books, clothes and toys

All in pretty colours of pinks and lilacs

This was no place for little boys

Then he spots the photographs

Pictures of a normal and happy family

A proud mother with her three girls

He thinks "why did mummy never love me?"

That's when he turns his back

Leaves behind the house and stairs

He knows not what the future holds

His little mind of 7 is unaware

Stepping out into the sunshine

It caresses his little face

Thinking his life cannot be worse

Than it was inside that place

Wearing only his scruffy pyjamas

Teddy in his hand, he walks with care

To the future there now in front of him

It's goodbye to the boy under the stairs
