Part 1 - Spring
It was a rare, crisp spring day where the sun shone as if it had just been born and the clouds parted for the blue sky in celebration of its arrival. Its crystalline, pure rays shattering the last few grips winter had on the land. The light glittered over the surface of the cool, dark lake, hinting at some underwater world where magic lived and mermaids frolicked.
Weeping Willows stooped low, their soft green leaves trailing on the water. The heaviness of winter finally lifting from their branches as the sun's warmth reached earth once again.
The gold light flickered across the fresh leaves, across the water and across my face; making my chestnut hair shine gold too. I smiled.
I was still wrapped in my thickest woollen scarf, my favourite purple one from years ago, along with my winter coat but as I walked I contemplated the change in weather. Perhaps it was time for a change in wardrobe too.
An ice cream van was parked not far from the lake, perhaps hopeful of a summer yet to come. The sun was warm on my face as I contemplated the loose change in my pocket. Just enough for one.
"A 99, please," I asked, "No flake though."
The man took my change.
"No flake?!" Uttered a surprised voice behind me, "You must be the first woman on earth to say that!" He laughed.
"Maybe I'm different," I turned, with my flake-less 99, to smile at the subtly handsome man.
"Well," He said, a grin on his face, "I'll have a 99 with two flakes please - to balance the world out again."
A set of ice-blue eyes looked directly into mine as the ice cream man laughed. My heart gave an involuntary flutter.
"I'm Jack," he said, before biting into a flake.
"Lisa," I smiled.
