The greatest fairytale n'er told,
Is perhaps the most ancient and old,
A great business opportunity came,
When locked 'way, were daughters of fame,
Tallest towers, in the highest rooms,
Princesses left to await their grooms,
Guarded by fierce, scaly beasts,
Scores of unsuitable knights to feast,
King Dragon sent his daughters for the role,
To keep them safe, keep them whole,
Breakfast wanders in willingly,
In royal castles kept so fittingly,
An easy job for beloved daughters,
Simple guarding beyond moat waters,
But one day a Prince from afar,
Came to claim a wife, his heart's star,
He flew in with the northerly wind,
Knowing who he wanted to find,
Not for the princess up high,
But for the dragon lying near by,
His bronze scales shone like the sun,
Great flight muscles each weighing a ton,
His lustful roars shook the castle bricks,
The Prince Dragon tried many flirting tricks,
But the guardian of love, the sapphire rose,
She would not fall for his rhyme nor pose,
A small face looked down from the tower,
Marvelling at the mystical power,
The Princess silently wishing for release,
To go off in to world, find her peace,
But now with two dragons about,
A knight could barely even shout out,
Never would one get through to save her,
To the Princess, a thought did occur,
She slipped down the walls,
around the halls,
Slipped and slid,
fell and crawled,
Sun rays hit her face,
a long lost embrace,
She did not run, she merely said,
"What beautiful dragons you are."
The vain, fickle beasts, looked to each other,
Realised that each was better than all others,
The Dragon Princess did surrender,
To this Prince, great, bronze, but tender,
Giant hearts aflame, wings out stretched,
The girl wondered at a love so farfetched,
But smiled all the same,
At these dragons now tame,
"Take me on your great wings,"
She asked, "So I may see brand new things."
Two silhouettes of bronze and sapphire,
A Princess on board, flew out over the shire,
With a promise to find her love,
While gliding past, high above.
